Ulos

Ulos is typical of Batak-shaped woven shawl. Sacred objects is a symbol of blessing, love and unity, according to Batak proverb which says: "Ijuk pangihot Hodong ni, ni pangihot Ulos holong", which means that if the fibers are binding on the vine stem is then ulos bond of affection between people.

Literally, ulos means blanket that warms the body and protect it from exposure to the cold. According to the Batak ancestral belief there are three sources that provide heat to the men, the sun, fire and ulos. Of the three sources of warmth such ulos considered the most comfortable and familiar with everyday life.
Formerly the Batak ancestors were mountain men, so called embedded history on them. This is due to their habit of living and farming in the mountains. By inhabiting the highlands means that they must be ready to fight against the bone-chilling cold weather. From this stems ulos history.

At first their ancestors relied sun and fire as a shield against the cold. A minor problem arises when they realize that the sun can not be governed in accordance with the wishes of men. At noon the clouds and overcast often be hostile. Being cold at night deepened and fire as a second choice turned out to be not so practical for use while sleeping because of high risks. Umm Al hajatu ikhtira'at, forced by the urgent need their fathers finally think hard to find a more practical alternative. Thus was born as a product of native culture ulos Batak tribe.
